The telecommunications market has witnessed several large acquisitions in recent months as the consolidation trend gains momentum.
For example, CenturyLink agreed to buy Level 3 Communications in a $24 billion deal in October. Other recent deals included the acquisition of FairPoint Communications by Consolidated Communications and Electric Lightwave by Telecom infrastructure provider, Zayo Group.
One of the key challenges for a successful merger deal in the telecom market is the need to combine two entirely different infrastructures which use equipment provided by many different vendors.
A possible way to guarantee a much faster and easier merger process is by ensuring that both sides are MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) certified, which enables smooth migration to one network which is fully operable.
The MEF Certification Program enables service providers to certify that their Carrier Ethernet services comply with the relevant MEF specifications.
A MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE 2.0) compliant end-to-end solution should fit any site requirement and any deployment scenario – single or multi-business, fixed or modular, outdoor or indoor deployment. This includes E-Line, E-LAN, E-Tree, E-Access, TDM convergence, single or multi-vendor networks, while supporting a wide range of capacity options.
MEF Certification offers the following benefits:
- It generates a new Ethernet service connection in hours instead of weeks.
- The service provider has peering relationships with many local operators across the world. It is important to have interoperable implementations for MEF Services and Interfaces.
- The MEF CE 2.0 program offers certification for service providers that are MEF members whereby service providers certify their service offerings for MEF CE 2.0 compliance.
Telco Systems has been playing an active role in the MEF committees for a long time, enabling us to help standardize Carrier Ethernet, contribute to various technical specifications and lead the market by introducing standards conforming products before most other vendors.
Telco Systems is among the first group of vendors that were certified with the CE 2.0 certification program for service providers and equipment vendors by the MEF.
